Deep Tissue  (usually offered in ½ hour to 1 hour sessions)

This massage works the deeper muscles in the body.  This massage is not as relaxing as Swedish American style massage.  We are working through skin, fascia, and layers of muscles.  This is done in a slow, and somewhat gentle way.  Although sometimes can cause some discomfort during massage.  Your massage therapist works with you to determine how much pressure is used.

Your therapist will try to help you determine what is causing the muscle problems you are experiencing.  Also will help you relieve the pain that you are feeling and to work towards a plan avoiding reoccurring problems with maintenance techniques.  Maintenance could consist of bodywork, stretches, posturing changes or work area adjustment suggestions.

There are times that breaking through scar tissues, trigger points and small muscle abrasions are necessary to relieve the pain. These scar tissues could have been caused by a build up of toxins, an old injury, a past trauma or surgery.  We try to break these up so that the muscle fibers line up with correct direction of muscle.

Example:  An area hurts and muscle contracts, so the pain makes us stop action. So now muscles are contracting and blocking the blood flow, so now a bunch of waste is building up.  You then have areas that turn into trigger points, and then turns into fibrous areas and you now feel a knot.

Deep Tissue can be very time consuming at times.  Because of this, you may need to plan several visits and focus most of time of specific areas on different visits.  It helps with chronic muscular pain and injury rehabilitation, and reduces inflammation-related pain caused by arthritis and tendonitis.  It is generally integrated with other massage techniques.  These techniques require more advanced training and a more thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology.
